Roundwood Notes ~ 24th of February 2014

AIKIDO

Aikido is a non-competitive Japanese Martial Art for Flexibility, Coordination, Relaxation and Self-Defence and Joe McHugh 4th Dan Aikido Aikikai will be holding a ten week beginners course in RoundwoodNationalSchool on Thursdays from 7.30 to 8.45pm.  The cost will be €50 for adults and €40 for students.  For further information please contact Joe at 086 1019668.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Amy Murphy and Jessie Scott who were playing with the Wicklow minor team that beat Carlow on Saturday in Carlow.  Amy was captain on the day, well done to our Roundwood girls.

SET DANCING

Set dancing is back in full swing in Kavanagh’s lounge every Thursday night with music this week by CDs and by the O’Kane family for the remainder of the month. Lessons before hand at 8.30 with session from 9pm until 11pm. Love if you could join us on the dance floor for a night of fun and good exercise

TUG OF WAR

Ballinastoe Tug of War club is starting back training soon.  We have both a men and women’s team. If you are interested in getting fit and taking up a team sport for the new year we would love to see you.  All are welcome.  For further information contact Ed on 086 1693109

GET VOCAL

Anyone over the age of 50 & who is interested in joining The County Wicklow Get Vocal group, rehearsals are starting Brockagh on 4th march from 11am 12.30pm. Various groups from around the country will rehearse over the next few months and in June will get together to sing the songs.  For further information you can contact Molly at 086 3291256

DIAMOND BRIDGE CLUB

Catherine McGillycuddy and Monica Brady took 1st place for North/South on Monday 17th February Nancy O’Brien and Phil Power were 2nd Catherine Halligan and Brid Clancy were 3rd and Ger Lenihan and Paddy O Brien were 4th.   Pamela Byrne, Clare Sally, Kay Plunkett and Gaye McGettigan shared 1st/2nd places for East/West and Miriam Coyle, Pat Rushe, Gertie Fee and Bridie Nolan shared 3rd/4th.

002 BRIDGE CLUB

Friday 21st February saw our visitors Bernadette Rowntree and Fedelma Martin take 1st place, June Digby, Monica Brady, Rachel Judd and Molly Byrne were joint 2nd 3rd and 4th place went to Bridie Nolan and Maura Gaskin.  East/West victors were Kay Plunkett and Mary Murphy, 2nd Gertie Fee and Jane Cronin. 3rd Pat Rushe and Miriam Coyle and 4th were Paddy O’Brien and Ger Lenihan. The club would like to wish Fedelma Martin every success in her campaign for Presidency of the C.B.A.I.

LOTTO RESULTS

There was no jackpot winner in last weeks draw.  The numbers drawn were 15, 23, 24 & 26.  There were nine match four winners, Ian Savage, Evelyn O’Connor, James Cullen, Mary Moxley, Tina, E.S.L. Kavanagh, Mary Carstairs, Chris Davis & Barry Fanning. Next weeks jackpot will be €18,800.

LADIES GOLF LESSONS

Djouce Lady Captain Deirdre Carroll is planning on organising group golf lessons at Djouce Golf Club for ladies who have always thought they would like to try the game of golf. The group lessons will be given by a golf professional and will cover all levels and also people who have never picked up a golf club before! So ladies give golf a try and don’t worry about not having any golf clubs the clubs you will need will be provided for the lessons. Golf is a great game. Come along and enjoy the fresh air and have fun. The plan is to hold the group lessons in early spring the total cost for four one hour lessons is €50. If you would like to take part just phone Deirdre on 087 9118499. Or just call into the club house and leave your name and a contact number.

ROUNDWOOD TIDY TOWNS

The next tidy towns clean up will take place on Saturday 1st of March at 11am meeting at the Old School.

WHIST RESULTS

The results of the whist is as follows:- Top Score: Kay Plunkett; Top Gent: Jimmy Molloy’ Second Gent: Pat Fisher; First Lady: Kitty Kennedy; Second Lady: Maureen Gaffney; First Half: Mary Cullen & Lowest Score: Ann Gaffney.  The raffle prizes were won by Tom McHugh & Nan Wolohan. The next whist will be on Wednesday 5th March 2014.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

The Annual Mass of Remembrance for Parishioners and family members of Parishioners who died since March last year and whose funerals took place outside the Parish will take place on Saturday March 15th at 6.30 pm

The Cuidiu Humpty Dumpty Playgroup meets every Wednesday from 10 – 11.30 am in the Parish Hall.  All pre-school children are welcome.  Bring along your Parent or Minder & they can have tea and a chat while you play!

A pilgrimage to two shrines of Montreal/Grosse lle, St. Lawrence River and Shrine of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Mohawk Indian recently canonised, then crossing the border to the United States to visit Mohawk birthplace of St Kateri and Niagara Falls.  Departing on 11th September until 19th September for 8 days. HISTORICAL SOCIETY AGM

The annual general meeting of Roundwood and District Historical & Folklore Society will take place on Monday 24th February at 8.30pm in The Old School Roundwood. The purpose of the AGM is to give members a report on the society’s activities and finances for the previous year and to elect committee members for the coming year.  It also allows time for members to ask questions or make suggestions.  All are welcome to attend and we always encourage new people to become members and to get involved in the Society. PLOUGHING SOCIETY

Roundwood Ploughing Society is holding their annual Ploughing Match on Saturday the 22nd of February at 12.00 noon in Coolharbour, Roundwood.  Sincere thanks to Mrs. Helena Lowe for providing the site. Conventional, Vintage, Classic Tractors and Horse Classes all catered for on Lea ground.  Please note all competitors must register before Wednesday the 19th of February with Brendan Power @ 087 2420204.  Spectators always welcome.

ROUNDWOOD PURE MILE 2014

It starts from Roundwood Health Centre along the Annamoe Road to the bottom of Derralossary Church Lane. A meeting of the  residents, landowners and anyone interested in getting involved in the 2014 Pure Mile will take place this Wednesday 19th February in Aras on Tochar at 7.30pm (last weeks meeting was cancelled due to the bad weather). Your support would be much appreciated so please do come along.
