Roundwood Notes ~ 29th of January 2014

SLEEPING BEAUTY TICKETS

Roundwood Variety Group is in the final weeks of rehearsals for their forthcoming pantomime, Sleeping Beauty which will take place from the 31st January to the 2nd February in the Brockagh Resource Centre in Laragh. Tickets are now selling fast for the pantomime so book early to avoid disappointment.  The cost is €12 for matinee and €15 for 8pm show.  It kicks off on Friday 31st January with an 8pm show, and a 3pm and 8pm show on Saturday and a 3pm show on Sunday.   Book your tickets by contacting 086 2451829. Our programme on sale for €2 is full of information about the show and cast and there is a free draw for a hamper when you buy a programme.  A show not to be missed, full of music, song, dance and comedy.

 MASS OF REMEMBRANCE

The Annual Mass of Remembrance for Parishioners and family members of Parishioners who died since March last year and whose funerals took place outside the Parish will take place on Saturday March 15th at 6.30 pm

MINDFULNESS COURSE

A mindfulness based stress reduction eight week course with Niall Nolan will take place in Roundwood Parish Centre on Tuesdays at 8pm.  For more information please contact M Gaskin at 086 1638042

HUMPTY DUMPTY PLAY GROUP

The Cuidiu Humpty Dumpty Playgroup meets every Wednesday from 10 – 11.30 am in the Parish Hall.  All pre-school children are welcome.  Bring along your Parent or Minder & they can have tea and a chat while you play!

 

CIRCUIT TRAINING FITNESS CLASS 

(i.e. Body Toning)  This is a full & total body workout for all fitness levels. It involves focusing on Toning & Training all areas of the body that need it! Everyone works to their own ability. Men & women are both welcome.  Class will be held every Wednesday evening in the Parish Hall from 7-8pm.  Please bring a bottle of water, a towel or a fitness mat for the floor exercises.  So come on lads & ladies …..lets tone up, get fit & look great & in shape for the Summer months !! €7 per class, ( pay as you go).  Phone Mary on 086-4070270 for any further information.

Set dancing is back in full swing in Kavanagh’s lounge every Thursday night with music this week by CDs and by the O’Kane family for the remainder of the month. Lessons before hand at 8.30 with session from 9pm until 11pm. Love if you could join us on the dance floor for a night of fun and good exercise.

002 BRIDGE CLUB

Taking 1st place for North/South on Friday 24th were Jim McNamara and Triona Woodroofe, 2nd Rowena Brady and Maria Magee 3rd Monica Brady and June Digby and 4th Marian Davis and Elizabeth Belton,  Margaret Bolger and Noeleen Redmond once again took 1st place for East/West 2nd Rachel Judd and Molly Byrne, 3rd Catherine McGillycuddy and Nancy O Brien and 4th Maura Gaskin and Bridie Nolan.

DIAMOND BRIDGE CLUB.

1st for North/South on Monday 20th January were Monica Brady and Bridie Nolan, 2nd Molly Byrne and Rachel Judd and 3rd Nancy O Brien and Brid Clancy the partnership of Ger Lenihan and Paddy O Brien was successful once again for East/West 2nd Marian Davis and Teresa Leahy and 3rd Catherine McGillycuddy and Gertie Fee

 

CLEAN UP

The Roundwood Tidy Towns Group are eager to start work early this year with their first Spring Clean taking place on the official start of Spring on Saturday 1st of February at 11am. Please meet at Roundwdood Old School with willing hands! All volunteers young and not so young will be most welcome!

 PILGRIMAGE

A pilgrimage to two shrines of Montreal/Grosse lle, St. Lawrence River and Shrine of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Mohawk Indian recently canonised.  Then crossing the border to the United States to visit Mohawk birthplace of St Kateri and Niagra Falls.  Departing on 11th September until 19th September for 8 days.  Cost is €1,695 per person sharing.  See website www.pioneerassociation.ie for details.  To book contact 0404 45276 after 8pm.

KILMACANOGUE HISTORY SOCIETY

Kilmacanogue History Society will present Kilmacanogue and the  1911 Census by Catriona  Crow in The Glenview Hotel on Tuesday  4th February 2014 February at 8.30pm. Entry €3 (€2 for members) All are welcome.  Catriona Crowe is Head of Special Projects  at the National Archives of Ireland.  She is Editor of Dublin 1911, published in 2011, Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Limerick, and a member of the RoyalIrishAcademy.

The results of the whist in aid of the Senior Citizens is as follows:- Top Score: Mary Cullen & Mary Pierce; (shared) Top Gent Ann Pierce; Second Gent : Monica Brady; Second Lady: Maura McHugh; First Half: Tom McHugh; Second Half: Jimmy Molloy; Lowest Score: Kitty Kennedy & Longest Sitting: Martin Byrne.  Raffle prizes were won by Tom McHugh, Mary Murphy, Ann Wolohan.  Next whist will be on Wednesday 5th February in The Parish Centre.

PERSONAL ALARMS

The Roundwood and District Community Council are registered to administer the senior alert scheme which provides grants to elderly people towards the provision of personal alarms. The personal alarm offers reassurance to allow independent living , safe in the knowledge that you can quickly be in contact with a family member or neighbour in the event of an emergency. Rowena Brady and Maria Magee were the 1st winners of 2014 for North/South 2nd June Digby and Monica Brady, 3rd Teresa Leahy and Liz Belton, continuing their success of 2013 Margaret Bolger and Noeleen Redmond were 1st for East/West Ger Lenihan and Kay Plunkett following a close 2nd and Gertie Fee and Jane Cronin were 3rd.  Friday the 17th saw Maura Gaskin and Bridie Nolan play their cards right for North/South, 2nd Catherine McGillycuddy and Nancy O Brien, 3rd June Digby and Monica Brady, whilst 1st for East/West were Noeleen Redmond and Margaret Bolger, 2nd Molly Byrne and Rachel Judd joint 3rd/4th were Ger Lenihan and Paddy O Brien and Gertie Fee and Jane Cronin.

Monica Brady and Phil Power took 1st place for North/South in the 1st competition of 2014 2nd Catherine McGillycuddy and Nancy O Brien 3rd Margaret Byrne and Catherine Halligan  1st for East/West were Gertie Fee and Brid Clancy, joint 2nd/3rd Ger Lenihan and Paddy O Brien and Maura Gaskin and Margaret Byrne.  In the individual competition  held in the Beginners section Barbara Donnelly took 1st place whilst Ann Kennedy, Padraic and Carmel  Gleeson were joint 2nd/3rd/4th.

ATHLETICS

Adult training every Tuesday at 6.30pm at GAA complex – so now is the time to put that New Year resolution into effect and get fit for 2014!  Wednesday Night Training For 10 years and older at 6pm at GAA complex. We need to see all the 10yrs+ athletes attending to prepare for the Leinster indoors.  Children’s training every Friday 6-7pm at GAA Complex.  Come along to the dam gates (out the Newtown road) at 10:00am every Sunday morning. Start your new years fitness program off with a gentle run.  New trainers and helpers always welcome and of course as are new members.  Please get all 2014 registrations back by Friday 24th January.

COFFEE MORNING

Elaine and Jessica Fanning are off to Nepal for a few weeks in February to work in an orphanage. They are raising funds to bring to the orphanage and will hold a coffee morning next Tuesday January 14th from 9.00 to 1pm at their house in Aghowle

YOGA

A New Year Yoga Course will start on Thursday 16th January in Roundwood Parish Centre.  Class will be held from 7.30p.m to 9.00p.m and will continue for 10 consecutive Thursdays. The course will include posture work, breathing techniques, relaxation and meditation.  There will be a special focus on improving the flexibility and strength of the spine during this course.  Classes cost 10 euro per class, with a commitment of 50 euro due on the first night.  All are welcome.  Contact Anne-Marie on 0868367578.
