Roundwood Notes ~ 30th of June 2014

ROUNDWOOD & DISTRICT TEXT ALERT

Community volunteers are now delivering information and sign up forms to all houses in the Roundwood Garda District. Those volunteers will be calling back over the coming weeks to collect the forms and subscription monies. Many of the volunteers are distributing within their own areas and should be known to you. An official receipt will be given for all money collected. If you have any concern regarding the person calling for money, please telephone 087 9040470 for verification. 

BARN DANCE

Moneystown  midsummer barn dance and BBQ fundraiser in Moneystown Community Centre on sat 26 July from 8pm. Music by the Country Boys  and the Roamin’ Cadillacs. Raffle on the night with the top prize, two tickets to Garth Brooks concert (on Tuesday 29th July) and lots more prizes. Over 18’s. Tickets cost  €15 and can be purchased by contacting  086 8378304 or from any committee member

BBQ FUNDRAISER

Avonmore Game Club will hold its sixth charity/fundraiser BBQ  on Sat 5th July  in Kavanaghs Vartry House at 6pm. This year again a donation will be made  to Roundwood Senior Citizens and Roundwood National School.   Music in the beer garden with Chris Lucas and special guests and from 9.30pm until late it’s The Roamin Cadillacs. Adults €15.00, children free .So for a menu with a difference, great music and craic come along, your support will be much appreciated For further information please contact 0868569812

PURE MILE MEETING

A meeting for residents and landowners of the Roundwood Pure Mile, which stretches from Roundwood Church on the Annamoe Road, to Derralossary takes place tonight, Wednesday 2nd of July at 8:30pm in the Old School. Anyone interested in getting involved or with an interest in the history or folklore of the road is also welcome as we wish to gather as much information on this area as possible.

GARTH BROOKS BUS

There is a bus organized for Saturday, 26th July from Roundwood to Croke Park for the Gareth Brooks Concert.   The bus will pick up from Tochar House (Fannings) in the afternoon and drop off back there after the concert. Anyone who would like to book their seat on the bus should contact Fiona at 087 917 6713.

DAY TOUR

The Roundwood Active Retirement and Whist committee have organised a day tour on Thursday 10th July to Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park and a Liffey Cruise, passing the Four Courts and Customs House. TUG OF WAR

The Ballinastoe teams took part in the All Ireland finals on Sunday, hosted by Stapleston’s Tug of War Club in Clontuskert, Galway. The ladies team pulled in the eight a side 560kg and the catchweight competitions, winning gold in both. Well done girls on taking home the titles to Wicklow. The mens team took part in the 700kg novice competition and after a gruelling days pull they narrowly lost out in the final. Hard luck lads.

SUMMER TIME FUN

The summer camp returns again in Roundwood N.S. for 4-7 year olds, for one week only this year from 14th – 18th July   10.00 a.m -1.00p.m. Activities will include, Art & Craft, singing, dancing, cooking and lots more fun! BLESSING OF GRAVES

The blessing of the Graves in Roundwood Cemetery will take place on Sunday evening July 27th at 7pm

There was no winner of last week’s jackpot. The numbers drawn were 8, 18, 21 & 26. There were two match three winners, Bridie Stacey & A Kenny. Next week’s jackpot will be €8,900.

The Roundwood Festival 2014 will take place from the 18th to the 20th of July. The amount raised has now topped a fantastic €2,500. Marie can confirm that despite the photo in the Wicklow People her “Mohican” is now gone.

MUSIC IN CALARY FESTIVAL

Lance Coburn(piano) winner of the Tomassoni International Piano competition in 2001, will perform on Thursday 26 June at Calary Church. He will be followed by the acclaimed international duo of Anna Cashell (violin) and Simon Watterton (piano) who will play on Saturday 28 June. The final Festival concert will be on Thursday 3 July when the Martello Piano Quartet of Philip Dodd (violin), Peter Crooks (Viola), Liam Sutton (cello) and Dearbhaile O’Donnell (piano) will play. All concerts start at 8pm and tickets, which are €15 and €12 for concessions, can be booked through derekneilson@eircom.net.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Roundwood Historical Society are delighted to announce that Eve Holmes will present a talk entitled “The Early History of Photography – especially Pinhole Cameras” on Monday June 23rd  at 830pm in the Old School, Roundwood.  Also on Monday 30th June in The Old School at 8.30pm 1914 – Sleepwalking into War” a lecture by Julian Walton.  Julian is the well known Waterford historian who will give this most interesting  lecture on the origins of World War 1. This special talk will be just two days after the centenary of the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28 1914. For almost twenty years Julian has delighted listeners of Waterford Local Radio with ‘On this Day’, a daily short talk on an  item of historical interest. He was a secondary teacher of history for many years and is now Historian in Residence at Dunhill Multi-Educational Centre, Co. Waterford, and gives an annual course of ten lectures. He has had a lifelong interest in Irish history, especially that of his home county of Waterford. He has edited two historical journals, is a Vice-President of the Irish Genealogical Research Society and a trustee of Waterford County Museum.  Further information can be obtained by emailing derekneilson@eircom.net  or by phoning 01-2818146

ATHLETICS BBQ

Our annual charity BBQ will take place on tonight, Wednesday 18th June at The Complex. This year the proceeds will go towards the Áras an Tóchar Building Fund. A fun filled evening is planned, with obstacle races, relays and races for kids, a Fit for Life Race for our Junior & Senior athletes. Along with the BBQ, we will have face painting, a raffle, spot prizes, and music. Everyone is very welcome to come along for what will be a great night of entertainment, hope to see you there!
