Charles has a strong interest in the Great Irish Famine and is author of the The Killing Snows, The Exile Breed and Cold is the Dawn.   Charles has used his extensive knowledge of Mayo, the catastrophic effect of the Great Hunger in the West and family documents to back up his story telling with a strong grasp of the statistics behind the trauma of the 1840’s. Famine roads were built as a result of forced labour of the Irish peasantry who were made to work for food during the Great Famine.  These roads remain as visible marks in the Irish countryside. He will also include comparisons between Mayo and the Famine in Wicklow.  We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 13th March at 8pm. The entrance fee for members is €3 and for non-members is €5 – payable at the door.

Roundwood Notes week 18th Feb 2018

SYMPATHY

A great sadness came over the village of Roundwood and extended community last week at the passing of Sean Kavanagh, Knockatemple.  No words could describe the darkness that fell on our village and the support and sympathy that went out to his parents, Noel & Marie and to his brothers, Edward, Noelie, Gerard, Enda & Mikey & to all the Kavanagh family.  People were numbed at the passing of this wonderful boy whose life ended so prematurely.  Huge crowds from far and near attended the house and the removal & the level of support was testimony to this lovely family who didn’t deserve what had been dealt to them.  I know the community will continue to support them through the very difficult months and years ahead & try in some way to help ease their pain   May Sean rest in peace & may he always be in the hearts of everyone that knew him.  “God saw you getting tired, when a cure was not to be. So He wrapped his arms around you, and whispered, “come to me.”  You didn’t deserve what you went through, so He gave you rest.  God’s garden must be beautiful, he only takes the best.   And when I saw you sleeping, so peaceful and free from pain, I could not wish you back to suffer that again”.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam
