Roundwood notes 14th of October

SHEEPDOG TRIALS

Roundwood Sheepdog Trials will take place on Friday the 1st of November commencing at 8.30am in the Squares, Baltynanima – signposted from the Lough Dan Road. Usual classes apply. For further information please call  PJ on 086 3781347

FOLK GROUP

Roundwood Folk Group are on the look-out for a guitarist/musician to help them in the New Year with Saturday night mass.  Very flexible not every Saturday & not a big commitment but very enjoyable.  Please contact Helena on (086) 300 if you would like to do it.

BADMINTON

Badminton has resumed on a Tuesday morning from 9.30a.m  All are welcome.

TABLE QUIZ

A date for your diary.  Roundwood Golf Society will hold their annual table quiz night in aid of Roundwood Senior Citizens Christmas party in Kavanaghs Vartry House on Friday the 25th October at 8.30pm.  Your support & donations for spot and raffle prizes would be gratefully appreciated.

Sunshine Fitness will be starting ‘Baby and Me’, ‘Golden Oldies’ (for aged 65+) and ‘Curvy Whirlies ‘ (for plus size women) fitness classes in the parish hall from September 17th.  Please contact Caitríona on 0876035780 for more information.

OSCARZ

An Tóchar GAA Oscarz Fundraiser – Saturday 19th October at 8pm.  An Tóchar GAA club will produce seven movies – 50 volunteer actors from the community and club will take part.  Each movie will be screened at our Oscarz event on Saturday 19th October, in Aras An Tochar. It promises to be a great night.  Don’t leave it too late to get your tickets.  Tickets €25 each are available from Roundwood Post Office, Liz Byrne  087 6736066, Phil Power 087 6468060

WALKING GROUP

Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action meeting at 7pm this Wednesday at the Coach House car park.  All welcome to walk at your own pace for approximately one hour.

WHIST RESULTS

The results of the whist are as follows:- Top Score: Richie Cullen; Top Gent: Pat Fisher; Second Gent: Shay Brady; Top Lady: Marie Magee; Second Lady: Marie Magee; First Half: Mary Pierce; Second Half: Mick Whelan; Longest Sitting: Jimmy Molloy & Lowest Score: Margaret Kennedy.  The raffle prizes were won by: Kitty Kennedy, Mary Kenna, Mary Pierce, Anne Pierce *& Pat Fisher.  The next whist will be tonight Wednesday 23rd October in the Parish Centre

DIAMOND BRIDGE CLUB

Maria Magee and Judy Skates took 1st first place for North/South on Monday 7th October, Ger Lenihan & Margaret Bolger were 2nd and Catherine McGillycuddy & Catherine Halligan were 3rd.  1st place for East/West were Maura Gaskin and Pamela Byrne and joint 2nd/3rd were Brid Clancy & Bridie  Nolan and Maria n Davies & Teresa Leahy.

002 BRIDGE CLUB

Noeleen Redmond and Margaret Bolger played their cards right for North/South on Friday 11th, 2nd Maria Magee & Gary Dowling and 3rd June Digby & Monica Brady. 1st for East/West were Liz Belton and Phil Kenna, 2nd Maura Gaskin & Bridie Nolan and 3rd Marion Davis & Teresa Leahy.

MEN’S SHED

The SHED is open every Tuesday from 10 to 12 a.m. at Pat Carr’s place in Knockraheen. If you have not already joined us you will be very welcome. Recently we visited Turlough Hill and with the sun shining and little wind it was a truly memorable, informative and educational outing. Sincere thanks to Paddy Hanlon who was our driver and guide and sincere thanks also to Gerry O’Toole for the use of a minibus. More recently we were delighted to welcome two nuns from the Hermitage Centre in Glendalough. They came on a mission and we will be delighted to help them.

LOTTO

There was no winner of the lotto jackpot last week.  The numbers drawn were, 3, 18, 24 & 28. There were one match three winner Pat McDonnell  Next week’s jackpot will be €15,400.

Our weekly set dancing sessions continue in Kavanagh’s Lounge All are always welcome – whether you have ever or never danced before  Session starts at 8.30 til 10.30 and cost is still only €5 for a goodnight of exercise.

MUSIC IN CALARY

A concert in aid of Sister Mary Killeen will be held at 8 pm on Friday 11 October in Calary Church (Eircode A98 H766). It will be given by soprano, Ava Dodd (overall Arklow Music Festival winner in 2018) accompanied by Rachel Factor. Ciara Brennan harp and some members of Roundwood Comhaltas will also be playing some lovely traditional music  and continuing Music in Calary’s theme of providing a stage for young talented artists, a local soprano, Marie Gorman, will also perform.  This concert is being held to raise much needed funds to support Sister Mary Killeen’s work for street children in the slums of Nairobi and there is the option of a delicious supper in the Church Room before the concert starts. The supper will begin at 6 pm sharp and the concert will start at 8 pm.  Tickets for the supper and concert are €40 while those for the concert on its own will be €18 and €15 for concessions. 002 Bridge Club

Liz Belton & Phil Kenna played their cards right on Friday 20th September to take 1st place for North/South, 2nd Monica Brady & June Digby, and 3rd Joh Loscher & Catherine McGillycuddy.   1st for East/West were Maura Gaskin & Bridie Nolan, 2nd Paddy O Brien & Gaye McGettigan and 3rd Kitty Heslin and Miriam Coyle.  Friday 27th September saw John Loscher and Kay Plunkett taking the honours for North/South Monica Brady & June Digby took 2nd place once again and 3rd was Teresa Leahy & Marion Davies.    Nancy O Brien and Catherine MCgillycuddy  took 1st place for East/west 2nd Kitty Heslin & Miriam Coyle and 3rd Phil Kenna & Liz  Belton.

Diamond Bridge Club

CRUISE

A Hidden Baltic Treasures Cruise of fourteen nights will depart on 22nd September, 2020 sailing from Cork with transport to the port by bus.  Places of interest that we will visit are Gothenburg (Sweden), Bellin (Germany), Ronne (Denmark) Visby (Sweden), Klaipeda (Lithuania ) and Gdynia for Gdansk (Poland). Skagen (Denmark), Bristol and returning to Cobh.  Cost of the cruise per person sharing is €1500 and a €300 deposit should be paid before 1st October, 2019 to secure your place to Susan at 087 6273032.

MASS OF THE ANGELS

Our Annual Mass of Remembrance will be on Saturday 5th October at 6.00 p.m in Roundwood Church.  This special Mass will be for the parents and families of babies who died before birth, at birth, or in infancy, and for those who died in early childhood, youth and young adulthood either in recent years or in the past. We extend a very warm welcome to all parents, families, relatives and friends who have suffered such a loss.

MENS’ SHED

Roundwood Men’s Shed: The Shed is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon  at Pat Carr’s place in Knockraheen. With all the cake and biscuits it may not be the best place to ‘shed’ a few pounds but we are learning to control our intake of sugary ‘stuff’. Of course there are very healthy vegetables available in our garden. So you will be assured of a very warm welcome if you are free to drop in. Ring 086 8650588 for further information
