HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The First talk Roundwood and District Folklore Society’s 2020 Series will take place on Monday 27th January 8pm in the Kavanagh’s Lounge (Vartry House).  This talk will feature ‘Some Houses in the Roundwood District’ by John Medlycott.  John Medlycott is an active member and past Chairman of Roundwood & District Historical & Folklore Society.  He has contributed numerous articles to the Journals of the Society.  John has a keen interest and extensive knowledge of local history which he has used to compile this talk on some of the local houses in Roundwood.  We look forward to seeing you on Monday 27th January 2020 at 8pm. The entrance fee is for members is 3 euro and for non-members is 5 euro- payable at the door

ROAD TO ROUNDWOOD

A local group is being set up to give a helping hand to those displaced in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crisis of our time. The Syrian Civil War has resulted in 11 million displaced Syrians. The Road to Roundwood is a community sponsorship project which will help a family integrate into our community in Roundwood rather than enter direct provision. If you feel you would like to support this project we are holding an information night in Roundwood Parish Centre on Tuesday 28th January at 7pm. ROBIN HOOD PANTO

Roundwood Variety Group performance of the Robin Hood pantomime will take place in Brockagh Centre Laragh on the 31st of January to the 2nd of February. The talented cast includes almost 50 children and 20 adults/teenagers from.the area. Action, adventure, music, song, love and bags of laughter are the order of the day in this brand new and exciting Panto adventure. GALA BALL

A gala ball in aid of Suicide or Survive will take place in The Parkview Hotel, Newtownmountkennedy on Friday 14th February at 7.30pm.  the even will include a champagne reception and four course meal and entertainment from Richie Malone of Status Quo, Press Play, Let Loose and D.J. Ernie Gallagher  Ticets are €45 per person and are available from the hotel reception or by calling 01 2015600.  All the funds raised on the night go directly to Suicide or Survive and will help bring life changing programmes into communities throughout Ireland.

002 Bridge Club

Monica Brady & June Digby got the new season off to a flying start by taking 1st place for North/South on Friday 10th January, 2nd Catherine McGillycuddy & Nancy O Brien & 3rd Rachel Judd & Molly Byrne.  1st for East/West were Judy Skates & Rowena Brady, 2nd Bridie Nolan & Maura Gaskin and 3rd Noeleen Redmond & Margaret Bolger.

Noeleen Redmond & Mrgaret Bolger took 1st place for North/South on 17th January, 2nd Nancy O Brien & Catherine McGillycuddy & 3rd Bridie Nolan & Triona Woodroofe.   1st for East/West were John Loscher & Kay Plunkett, 2nd Gertie Fee & Jane Cronin and 3rd Maria Magee & Teresa Leahy.

Diamond Bridge Club

Ger lenihan & Paddy O Brien took 1st place for North/South in the first competition of 2020, 2nd Claire O Connor & Kay Plunkett and 3rd Catherine McGillycuddy.  Making their mark for East/West were Margaret Bolger & Rowena Brady, 2nd Marian Davis & Teresa Leahy and 3rd Clare Sally & Pamela Byrne.

BADMINTON

Badminton continues on Tuesday mornings from 9.30a.m.  All are welcome.

SUNSHINE FITNESS

Sunshine Fitness will be starting ‘Baby and Me’, ‘Golden Oldies’ (for aged 65+) and ‘Curvy Whirlies ‘ (for plus size women) fitness classes in the parish hall from September 17th.  Please contact Caitríona on 0876035780 for more information.

WHIST RESULTS

The results of the whist are as follows:- Top Score: Anne Wolohan; Top Gent: Shay Brady, Second Gent: Margaret Kennedy, Top Lady: Monica Brady, Second Lady: Patricia Byrne, First Half: Catherine Doyle, Second Half: Jimmy Molloy, Longest Sitting: Anne Pierce & Lowest Score: Mary Pierce.  Raffle prizes were won by: Maura McHugh, Richie Cullen, Marie Magee, Pat Fisher & Martin Byrne.  Next whist will be on Wednesday 29th January.

LOTTO RESULTS

There was no jackpot winner in last weeks draw.  The numbers chosen were 5, 13, 19, & 20.  There were ten match three winners.  S Synnott, P McMahon, Frank Dunleavy, Caroline Grant, Mick Grant, Cole Hayden, Ann Byrne, Celine Moreton Joy Mulligan & Mary, Matthew  & Alan.  Next weeks jackpot will be €19,000.

GentleBirth Childbirth Education Workshop in Roundwood, Saturday 8th Feb ‘20, 9am – 6pm in Roundwood Parish Hall.  The workshop provides you with mental preparation using the latest brain science to give you emotional resilience which improves with instruction and practice.  Learn physical comfort measures so you have a full toolkit of strategies for you and your partner to use.  Knowing how to navigate your options and birth preferences with your health care provider is important so you can feel in control.  This is a 1-Day in-person workshop experience for two people (Mom and Birth Partner). Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action meeting at 7pm this Wednesday at the Coach House car park.  All welcome to walk at your own pace for approximately one hour.

Our weekly set dancing sessions continue in Kavanagh’s Lounge on Thursday nights.  All are always welcome – whether you have ever or never danced before  Session starts at 8.30 til 10.30 and cost is still only €5 for a goodnight of exercise.

The Roundwood Cancer Support centre is now up and running and is open in the Parish Centre on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10a.m until 1pm & they are currently looking for volunteers if you could spare some time in your week it would be greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to pop in for a chat we will be happy to help.  If anyone needs to make any enquiries outside these hours please telephone our confidential phone number 087 6062072

A pilgrimage To Medjugorje will take place on October 7th 2020 for seven days at a cost of €679.00 fully inclusive  There will be a discount of €100 if paid in full by December 13th otherwise €200.00 deposit secures booking.  This trip will be accompanied by a Spiritual Director  The accommodation is close to the Church. ROUNDWOOD CUIDIÚ TODDLER PLAYGROUP 

Meets in Roundwood Parish Hall from 10-11:30am on Wednesdays. Parents/carers/grandparents all welcome €2 members & €4.50 non member. New volunteers needed. To become a member of Cuidiu check out (https://www.cuidiu.ie/membership) which allows you to avail of €2 entry to any of Cuidiú playgroups. There are also other discounts available with your membership.

Friday 13th December was lucky for Catherine McGillycuddy & Triona Woodroofe who took 1st place for North/South, 2nd June Digby & Monica Brady and 3rd Kay Plunkett and John Loscher.  1st for East/west were Maria Magee & Jim McNamara, 2nd Liz Belton & Phil Kenna and 3rd Marion Davis & Teresa Leahy.

Liz Belton & Phil Kenna shared 1st place in the Winter League 3rd June Digby and joint 4th/5th Marion Davis and Teresa Leahy.  Congratulations to all who took part and Happy New Year to everyone.    Bridge resumes on Friday 10th January.

DIAMOND BRIDGE CLUB

Monday 16th December saw Ger Lenihan & Margaret Bolger take 1st place for North/South in the final competition of 2019, 2nd Monica Brady & Phil Power and 3rd Gertie Fee and Brid Clancy.  Kay Plunkett and Marie Kavanagh were the winners for East/west, 2nd Paddy O Brien & Catherine McGillycuddy & 3rd John Loscher and Maria Magee.   Paddy O Brien took 1st place in this seasons league, 2nd Maria Magee, 3rd Phil Power, 4th Catherine McGillycuddy and 5th Nancy O Brien.  Congratulations to all and Happy New Year.  2020 bridge resumes on Monday 13th January.
