ROUNDWOOD HISTORICAL
The Roundwood Historical Society’s next talk in the 2017 Series will take place on Tuesday, April 11th at 8pm in the Roundwood Parish Hall and will be given by Ned Fleming.  The title of the talk is “Construction of the Vartry Waterworks”. Ned’s talk will focus on the construction of the Vartry Waterworks which were developed by Dublin Corporation in the 1860s.  The original (lower) reservoir was completed in 1863 and a second embankment was completed in 1923 to form the upper reservoir.  The scheme was a significant engineering feat, with much of the ground and building works being carried out and completed by men using only picks, shovels, horses and carts. At the time, the scheme greatly improved sanitation in Dublin City and helped reduce outbreaks of cholera, typhus and other diseases associated with contaminated water. The original Vartry Water Supply Scheme still provides drinking water to around 15% of the Greater Dublin Area.  Ned is a Chartered Engineer, a Graduate of UCD and is employed by Dublin City Council.  He has worked for more than thirty years in public water supply.  We look forward to welcoming you on Tuesday 11th for what promises to be a very interesting talk on the construction of the Vartry Waterworks.  Members and non-members are welcome to attend. The entrance fee for members is €3 and for non-members is €5 – payable at the door
