Roundwood Festival Canoe Race

Canoe race on the Upper Vartry Reservoir

The Roundwood Festival canoe race will take place at the Upper Vartry Reservoir Dam this year. It all starts at 5pm on Saturday 19th of July. Registration opens from 4:30pm with an entry fee of €5/€10. Open to all ages from 13 years up (13 – 17 years olds with parental consent). Competitors must be able to swim.  The race will be approximately 500m in length. Canoes and safety equipment will be provided. Due to the risk of water contamination competitors cannot bring their own canoes/kayaks. Parking will be available at the Vartry Grounds. Come along and have a go! Tis great fun!

Soap Box Derby

Roundwood Street Festival – Soapbox Derby 20th of July 2014

 This is a fun free event but naturally there are a few basic rules

Competition Information & Rules

  • The course for the event will be on Roundwood Bank starting above seating area and finishing outside Vartry House – Byrne and Woods.
  • Each Soap Box driver will be expected to compete in two runs, one practise and one qualifying run. The winner will go through to a final.
  • All Soap Boxes must be well constructed with completely functional brakes and steering.
  • Braking with the hands and feet is not permitted.
  • Brakes should function independently of the steering and should be connected to and operated on at least two wheels.
  • No storage power or external energy sources are allowed (catapults particle accelerator etc.)
  • Soap Boxes should not exceed a maximum of 2 metres x 1 metre and weigh less than 50 kilos.
  • All Soap Boxes to be presented at 6pm where they will be scrutinised and judged.
  • Race starts at 7pm. No more than one person will be allowed to push the Soap Box.
  • The push start will be between two clearly defined lines.
  • The Soap Box cannot be pushed after the second line has been reached.
  • We encourage all participants to be as creative with their designs as possible; there will be a special prize for the most unusual (and functional) Soap Box.
  • No entry fee
  • ALL COMPETITORS PARTICIPATE AT THEIR OWN RISK
  • ONLY COMPETITORS WHO HAVE SIGNED THE INDEMNITY FROM WILL BE ALLOWED COMPETE
  • ORIGINAL FACTORY PRODUCTS ARE NOT ALLOWED
  • THE COMPULSORY DRESS CODE CONSISTS OF A HELMET, PANTS & TOP.
  • ALL COMPETITORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO OBEY THE EVENT STEWARDS ON THE DAY.
  • THE DECISIONS OF THE ROUNDWOOD FESTIVAL SOAP BOX JUDGES ARE FINAL
  • PARENTAL PERMISSION REQUIRED IF DRIVER IS UNDER 18

Roundwood Notes ~ 7th of July

ROUNDWOOD FESTIVAL 18th to 20th of July

There are lots happening for children and all the family at the Roundwood Festival this year. Roundwood Fun Family Challenge looks set to kick-start events on Friday evening with an obstacle course that may not suit the fittest families in the area! A range of walks from the Parish Hall take place on Saturday morning which will be well finished in time to head over to the Upper Reservoir Dam at 5pm for the canoe race. Sunday 20th of July is competition time with something for everyone, including ‘make a monster’ from recycled materials, handwriting, junior photography and ‘bake and decorate’ a cupcake. Application forms are available in Roundwood Post Office, the Parish Hall and in other local outlets. To bring some extra interest to the village there is also a scarecrow competition. Prizes for the most imaginative scarecrows. For the bigger ‘kids’ there’s a soap box derby at 7pm on Sunday too. Lots more festival favourites will take place from 3pm Sunday including butter making, dog show, tug of war and lots, lots more. So start practicing and making folks, as there’s less than two weeks to go. WHIST

ROUNDWOOD & DISTRICT TEXT ALERT

Community volunteers are now delivering information and sign up forms to all houses in the Roundwood Garda District. Those volunteers will be calling back over the coming weeks to collect the forms and subscription monies. Many of the volunteers are distributing within their own areas and should be known to you. An official receipt will be given for all money collected. If you have any concern regarding the person calling for money, please telephone 087 9040470 for verification.

LUNCH CLUB

A reminder that the next Active Retirement Lunch club will take place on Friday 18th July in The Glenview Hotel, Glen of the Downs.

BARN DANCE

Moneystown midsummer barn dance and BBQ fundraiser in Moneystown Community Centre on Saturday 26th July from 8pm. Music by the Country Boys and the Roamin’ Cadillac’s. Raffle on the night with the top prize, two tickets to Garth Brooks concert (on Tuesday 29th July) and lots more prizes. Over 18’s only. Tickets cost €15 and can be purchased by contacting 086 8378304 or from any committee member. All proceeds go to Moneystown Community Centre.

GARTH BROOKS BUS

If the Garth Brooks concerts go ahead there will be a bus organized for Saturday, 26th July to go to Croke Park for the Gareth Brooks Concert.   The bus will pick up from Tochar House (Fanning’s) in the afternoon and drop off back there after the concert. Anyone who would like to book their seat on the bus should contact Fiona) at 087 917 6713.

 SUMMER TIME FUN

The summer camp returns again in Roundwood N.S. for 4-7 year olds, for one week only this year from 14th – 18th July   10.00 a.m -1.00p.m. Activities will include, Art & Craft, singing, dancing, cooking and lots more fun! BLESSING OF GRAVES

The blessing of the Graves in Roundwood Cemetery will take place on Sunday evening July 27th at 7pm

FRENCH CLASSES

French classes will be starting in Roundwood Parish Hall in September. Club Babar is a fun introduction to French for Junior and Senior Infants with fun packed classes designed to give your child a lively introduction to the French language through games, songs, stories and more. The classes will be every Wednesday from 2.15pm to 2.45pm starting on 17th September. Enrolment is now open but book early as spaces are limited. MONEYSTOWN DANCE

The Wicklow Man will play in Moneystown Community Centre on Friday 11th July at 9.30pm. Teas, door prizes & refreshments. Come along and enjoy a night of waltzing, jive etc.

OUR LADY’S ISLAND

There will be a pilgrimage to Our Lady’s Island on Sunday 17th August leaving the Parish Hall, Roundwood at 10a.m. The cost is €50 per person which includes the bus and dinner. All money needs to be in before 1st August to Susan at 0404 45276.

LOTTO RESULTS

There was no winner of last week’s jackpot. The numbers drawn were 1, 6, 13 & 18. There were six match three winners, John Byrne, Steven Magee, C. Price, Lucy Molloy, Betty Cahill & David Price. Next week’s jackpot will be €9,200.

WHIST

The next whist will be on Wednesday 9th July in the Parish Centre.

HOME PRODUCERS MARKET

Roundwood Home Producers Market continues in Roundwood Parish Hall on Sundays from noon – 5p.m every Sunday. Come for your home baking, jams, crafts, vegetables, plants, etc. New members always welcome.

ANGEL HEALING

Angel Healing takes place every Monday night at 7.30 in the Parish Centre, Roundwood Village. It is non denominational. Come along to a night of spiritual connection, relaxation and meditation. For more information contact Mary 087 9819420

SET DANCING

Set dancing in Kavanagh’s lounge every Thursday night with music this week by CDs and by Michael and Brian for the remainder of the month. Lessons before hand at 8.30 with session from 9pm until 11pm. Love if you could join us on the dance floor for a night of fun and lively banter.
